CU Engine Questions...

Post by volks_womble »

Having had the van since August, we haven't really had much chance to do anything with it.

I am now starting to get a bit of time to start fiddling with it....

One of the list of jobs that the previous owner never quite got round to was working out why it used so much oil. Having followed it down the road, it didn't appear to be burning it, and looking underneath, it looks a lot like most of it is just leaking out. The PO's intention was to change the rocker cover gaskets (and at least two sets were included when we bought the van) but this doesn't appear to be the source of the issues to me.

From what I have read, changing rocker cover gaskets is a pretty regular thing to do. ~Similarly Pushrod tube seals should also be changed pretty regularly too, and this is my intention.

Questions:

- I can only see push rod tubes and seals advertised for 1.7 - 2.0 Aircooled as Bay window items. Are the T25 (CU) ones the same?

- On one side there is a cover (tinware?) but not on the other. Presumably I am missing one? Any suggestions as to where I can get a new one? I can't find them listed anywhere....

Thanks

Check Brickwerks for the pushrod tubes and seals, I just got seals from there myself for my CU. Didn't get the tubes as I had a quick check for corrosion but they looked pretty good, I can see where a previous owner has tried to stop the leaky seals with some sort of black sealant rather than do the job properly!
I think the pushrod tubes might be an engine out jobbie, unless you buy the spring loaded type which apparently can be done with the engine in situ.
As for the tinwear one side of mine is missing too, I think you can only get them second hand but not entirely sure

Hi,
The push rod tube seals are the same for the 1.7 -2.0 bay engine or the 2.0 T25 Aircooled.
They don't need the engine out to change, jack up the rear and take the rear wheels off.
Clean round the rocker covers
Remove the tin wear below the push rod tubes
Remove the rocker cover
Take a picture for reference
remove the long tube retaining clip
remove the two nuts that hold the rocker assy in place
pull the rocker assy off
take the push rods out (note were they came from)
Pull the push rod tubes out, might need to get an open ended spanner and use it to push the tube out from underneath
Clean tubes up and replace seals, grease lightly to re fit
make sure push rods are re seated into the tappets (bit in the engine)
Refit the rocker assy and don't over torque the retaining nuts
Re fit spring push rod retainer thing, refer to picture :D
Clean up and refit rocker covers with new gaskets, no sealant used

Or use a Haynes manual!
Hope that helps

Cheers for that, will make my life easier knowing they can be done in with the engine in situ, I have got a Haynes but its not great, shows the re-assembly but all with the engine out. hopefully going to get mine done this weekend it will be nice to have no oil leaks!!

Thanks for the walk thru pete, doesn't sound too taxing.

Do the wheels need to come of for clearance, or just room to work?

I will probably do mine on a lift is all... :)

Which piece of tin is missing?

Is it one of the under tins?

Oh, I wish I had know that before I bought some gen. VW ones from brickworks... GRP ones wouldn't rust!

What sort of money are they?

£25 each plus post or £50 per pair inc post...

I'm also in the process of manufacturing the moulds for the 2 pieces of tin that go between the under tins and the head tins
