central locking

Post by VWKat »

Just browsing eBay and discovered you can buy central locking systems and alarms for quite cheap. Anyone have any experience installing these and if so, is it worth it? I'm thinking it might make me feel more confident parking my van on the street.

Thanks k

This may be a silly question... but I'll ask anyway - do these kits work with the sliding door too? Mine doesn't lock/unlock from the outside, a proper pain, would be great if I could simply install this kit :)

Yes they will but they install into the sliding door so the awkward bit is getting power to them - you'll need to have something like the below which is a bit of a fiddle to fit !

I fitted this about 6months ago nice easy install on THE cab doors once you work it out. as for the side door. I spent ages getting this working but in the end i disconnected it. I always drive with the slider locked (early van) have heard problems with doors opening when driving. but with the central locking on the slider this became annoying as i had to lock all doors. I also dont find it a huge deal to have to open cab door to unlock slider. I used the hawke system. nice and cheap and works well.

Have you got any pics showing how you mounted the actuators? I had a quick look under my door cards and there doesn't seem to be much room to fit it between the window and the rod from the door handle.

No pics at the mo but i can take some. i basically bend the rolled piece of metal directly below the push pull locking mech. and attached it there. Left me know if you need pics and ill try and take some.

Hi Ben,

Would you mind posting a pic of your actuator position please?

I'm struggling to get my head around this one. Beginning to think maybe the recommended Right Click actuators are bigger than Hawke ones?

They're ok but don't last forever. Mine lasted 7 years and then one fell apart. Luck of the draw I'd say. Electric windows a lot more use. Love mine.

I have fitted one of these kits to all the doors on mine. The front doors are a doddle as the actuators just line up north south along side the lock buttonrod and drill a couple of holes to screw them in. A bit fiddly to attach the rods but easy enough. The slider is just as easy, I used a mechano type bracket to secure one end of this one. I used sliding door contacts but had to cut the base down so they would fit nearer the panel join above the courtesy light switch at the front of the door. wiring is easy here as there is a nice access hole in the pillar. Now the back door. I luckily had a second hand door fitted from california which had central locking. So I swapped the lock barrels and fitted a different 2 wire actuator instead of the vw one and hey presto. I routed the wiring though with the heated screen wiring into the door. If I leave the lock unlocked with the key now the central locking will lock and unlock the door. If I lock the back door with the key it is always locked and will not unlock with the CL. I keep a spare door locking motor as I'm aware that these are not as high in the quality stakes as you would wish. Best thing is not to copy someone else just whip the panels off and have a look you might do it better than us!!!
