I'm thinking of going down this route, but my van is an auto. Has anyone got any experience living with a Scooby van coupled with a VW auto gearbox?

I am starting to really get interested in the Subaru option... I have always fancied it bit my current 1.9DG has a peach of an engine , so apart from the extra MPG and grin factor I couldnt really justify the expense.
However, Im just about to sell this van and the new one has a broken 2.1 MV so it could be time to take the plunge.
I have read all through the RJES website, and although a great site I find the pricing or lack of pricing very complicated and confusing...
I understand that to fit the engine I would need
The bell housing replacement, and various thrust bearing operating parts
A Modified wiring loom
An exhaust system
An engine cradle
a modified sump
modified throttle linkage
anything else I am missing ?
Does anyone know what the costs are for these parts, I think I read that the cost was about £1200 ? but it would be great to hear from people who have actually bought the parts.
I am a mechanic ( non practising lol ) so am happy to do the work, but would not want to get into fabricating parts.
I am leaning toward the 2.5 , more is better ??

A reversed coolant manifold (I don't believe it's essential but helps a lot and looks a lot tidier!
Exhaust wise, I have been told a porsche boxter back box (you can pick them up on ebay for around £80) can be modified to fit relatively easily.

Thanks for your reply and advice Jimmy, lots more reading to be done before any decision is made, If I do eventually work out what things actually cost I will pen a post and let people know.

I'm also thinking of going down the Subaru route after AAZ seized last week.
My main concern is getting good MPG as van is used for going away a month at a time maybe 2-3 times a year.
Would anyone be able to give me rough MPG I could expect from a Subaru 2.2?

I am also looking for much improved MPG , the LPG route is also in my thought process at the moment, but I have read forum posts all about Subaru and LPG not being happy friends..... ?

I'm in the process of buying all the stuff and converting mine over the next few weeks, I'm just waiting for rjes to get back to me with a price and send the parts, I've got my ej20 engine with converted loom coming next week (service history and ready to put in £730 delivered) and my exhaust (£80) came today!

Jimmy, one of the things that I am struggling to source is the exhaust. It looks like RJES used to sell one but for some reason stopped making them.
What is the exhaust you are fitting from ? or is it a custom made one ?
Im guessing that maybe I can someone to fabricate some tubes to fit into a stainless steel twin box , but as its such a common ( relatively speaking of course ) conversion I would have thought that there would be someone selling one off the shelf.?

I don't know of any off the shelf ones apart from the stainless steel one that rjes used to do. I have been told that a Porsche boxter exhaust can be easily modified to fit using the original subaru headers, however they all seem to be centre exit and I have a towbar so if sourced a lotus esprit stainless steel exhaust for £80 (inc delivery) it is also a twin entry exhaust so it should be fairly easy to fabricate something to fit. I'm sure there are probably other exhausts that would do the job and they are probably going to be from mid or rear engine cars. This photo should give you the idea

Had my conversion done this year, fitted with EJ25 N/A. Head gasket and belts done before fitting so no worries there. Power wise it's more than enough, running a 5 speed AGT box. Before the conversion I was unsure weather to go for a TDI with better fuel encomey and flipped audi box or all out power with the subaru, depends how you wanna use it. For me the Doka is not my daily so all out power won, nothing quite like tearing past a slammed Honda civic with a truck better used for trips to the tip. I fitted power steering, poly bushed everywhere, fitted BMW e30 servo and it feels like my Mercedes sprinter to drive but makes me smile every time.
