Removing Alternator Pulley wheel

Post by centro »

Got my hands on a replacement alternator, but the pulley wheel is one that sticks out too far. Can I swap it for the wheel on my current alternator? I have tried getting the nut off the new one, but I can't get enough resistance to loosen it — Any tips or tricks for that?

I clamp an old belt round the pulley with the vice. This usually works. Not always though, they are bliddy tight. If that doesn't work I then resort to clamping the pulley in the vice and gradually crack the nut, not easy as the nut is inside the jaws of the vice and you need a big one  to get the pulley in.

I had this problem, my alternator died and had to put the original pulley on the new one (it was the same model alternator). I clamped the "fins" of the alternator in a big a*** vice and then used the spanner hammer technique. It was proper on there though.

Good luck :D

Its possible to pass a large screwdriver through the fins to hold them , then with the socket on a t bar give it a short sharp clout with a hammer, quite often the shock/force will undo them easier rather than constant force. Obviously try not the bend the fins ! I have used this technique when I dont have access to a vice .
