Weber Carburettor?

Hi all, my first post with 80-90 and well chuffed there's a place to seek advice and listen to seasoned bus lovers.
Can anyone PLEASE tell me where I can get a Weber Type 34 DAT carb from?
It's to replace the Pierburg that is idling way too fast but only when warm- hmm! Anyone know how to remedy this even?
I've looked on "justkampers" and they are sold out, as are "VW heritage" and don't know where else to find one?
Any help appreciated,

Hi Helga. Welcome to the 8090 community!
The Weber product advertised as a replacement for the Pierburg 2e3 has now been discontinued, thankfully. It wasn't a great thing to have on your van.
The Pierburg is an excellent carb when correctly set up, and yours will probably just need a tweak. Problem is finding someome who knows how. We can do it for you with pleasure if required.
If you are still determined on the Weber thing, I have a couple in the parts bin I removed from customers' vans when swapping back to Pierburg.

Many thanks Andrews. really appreciate the advice and yeah, I've read a few varying opinions- throw the Pierburg away and swap over to Weber, then the exact opposite that the Pierburg is sweeter when set up proper.
I'd like nothing more than to have you guys set my Pierburg up but Grantham is some distance from Surrey. If we ever bring the bus up that way I'd def' look to try book an appointment .
My main problem is it starts first time perfectly, every time. It idles really nice when cold but here's the weird thing, when she's warmed up she runs on high idle like a 1000 rpm over normal. It can't be the idle screw as she'd run fast upon start-up. There's no running, acceleration issues either she pulls really nicely it's purely the really fast idle when warm! hmmm

Hi and welcome to the club :) I had a problem not so long ago with high idleing speed and found it to be a split vacuum hose linking the carbs, replaced all the vacuum hoses for new, even the little skinny ones, and she has been sweet as a nut since, could be worth a quick check :) I have twin webbers on my 2.0cu engine and I gotta say the sound from them is sweet! they seem to perform pretty well and touch wood I haven't had any issues with them yet! they also look pretty cool when you take off the engine hatch cover :)

Fast idle mechanism needs oiling probably
search my posts for further information.

Do not use a weber they do not suit the WBX 1.9DG assuming that's what you have, as you haven't said.

Kev- yeah, she's a 1.9 DG 1990. Crackin little gem. Mint interior and very very clean body and underneath. One owner from new! Serviced every single year. Just gonna drop her 40mm and she's awesome. Mega thanks for the steer I think I'm coming round to keeping the Pierburg and try get a carb refurb kit and do it myself.
Tony- big thanks too, yup will do the basics and check all hoses and vacuum advance too. I had a quick look and couldn't see anything obvious. Normally whistle too when they are letting air in somewhere.

Never known a weber work on any v-dub properly. Seen so many owners spend money and hours trying to get them to run right, and they drink fuel compared to the pierburg. The only time they might be deemed suitable is where the performance curve has been dramatically changed across the board and that means a lot of thought and planning from the bottom up, and even then, twin carbs win out usually.

Mine idles rather high at mo but no bad thing in winter months. Will sort it when I next see a sunny day :D

Its perhaps a little unfair to be totally dismissive of the weber as I'm sure someone, somewhere has had some luck with one but they do seem to be thirsty which is the last thing you need on an already (by todays standards) inefficient engine. The pierburg is at least mildly sympathetic when it comes to tuning for economy. Even if yours idles high, I doubt it'll drink as much as a weber will. :wink:

I love my Weber :ok

Was already installed when I bought the van, but runs lovely, is great uphill's & the mpg isn't that bad when driven like a nun :D

Thanks again to all for your advice. Really chuffed i found this site and all the decent "volk" on here.
I'm going to persevere with the Pierburg and treat her to an overhaul kit from JK etc.
For any Weber lovers my neighbour has one and he's loves it and never had an issue plus the guy who
has inspected my bud worked over in US on T25's for 30 years and loves the Weber too.
I guess it's personal choice and idiosyncrasies etc etc. Not pun on Syncro btw/

Nice. ebay must have an entire VW T25 in bits. Wonder if you add em all up it would be same price as a new one?

Hi can anyone help? I have a 1988 bus , the problem I have is when I start the engine it runs fine but if you open it up to full throttle, it's sounds like it is not getting enough fuel but if you look down the second choke the fuel is spraying in from the lower jet and top jet, may be little to much. I hope some can shine some light on this cheers ps forgot to say its pierburg carb.

Good question Kev. By the description, sounds like the "top jet" is the accelerator pump squirting as it should. Not really possible to hold WOT long enough to see much down second venturi.
Ps Might be better starting a new thread for this, as not really related to the OPs question or title.

Sounds like our friend isn't 'setting' the automatic choke to me ... with the key in the ignition (after checking all the vital fluid levels obviously) press the accelerator pedal to the floor and release it slowly, then start the van and the engine should rev to just over 2,000 rpm, leave it doing that for a minute or two and gently blip the throttle ... it should now drop to around 1500 rpm. Now you should be able to drive normally and when you stop the tick over will be around 800-900 rpm.

Forget the Weber as said ... fine on some engines NOT on a wbxer though Image An old friend who's an aero-engineer tried to fit one to his 1.9DG after many conversations with Weber Technical (who made him a special case trying to sort these issues out once and for all) many different jets fitted, many pounds spent sending parts backwards and forwards they both gave it up as a bad job ... his Weber is now in a cardboard box in his lock-up. Trust me if HE can't get it tuned and working then no-one can.
