Structural corrosion on sills - advice please!

Post by kingcal »

Hi guys, sorry in advance for the long post but am looking for some advice on a van I've rescued from where it has been sat in a friends garden. After a bit of inexpensive tinkering, the 2.0 Aircooled lump now runs well. I put the van through an MOT to get an idea of what needed doing to get it roadworthy, the fail sheet listed the following areas as having "excessive corrosion":

Nearside and offside seat belt anchorage
Nearside and offside rear suspension component mounting
Nearside rear (in wheel arch) suspension component mounting
Not a fail but the bottom of the sliding door is well gone, and there are a few spots underneath the window rubbers

Some pictures of the above areas (sorry about the quality, taken on my iPhone):

From a look at the photos, a restorer gave me a ballpark figure of somewhere between £2-3k for the work required as it's obviously mostly in structural areas and not a small task!

I'm hoping some of you rather knowledgeable 80-90 folk might be able to advise whether or not it's worth getting the work done or if I should cut my losses and look for another van to transplant the engine and interior into? I've come across someone selling a van for £1500 with no engine (it was a watercooled van but was most recently running a 1.6 Aircooled engine - I'm assuming it would be a straight swap of the 2.0 engine and gearbox into the van?) or interior. I'm yet to see it in the flesh, but am told that it is pretty solid underneath but the fuel filler panel, one of the steps and the rear corners are the worst bits. Some pictures of it are below.

Can anyone give me a ballpark figure of the cost for the panel work on the white van?

Your thoughts are welcome!

Ian

I wouldn't spend £3k welding something that isn't going to be worth £3k when finished, id sell it as it is. Would you put a £10 bet on a horse when you have no chance of getting any money back.? Buy something that is roadworthy to start with and has a engine. Was it £3k to weld or is that with paint.? I agree with mm don't know what the secret is. Adam

Its all the usual areas... and looks like its been painted over badly some years ago which means probably lots of dodgy rusting repairs underneath the paint that you can't see.
For that reason, I'd pass on it and return it to the garden you found it in :ok
