Non VW - Toyota Yaris CV Joints

Post by Titus A Duxass »

I know that someone one here has or had a Yaris so.....

I think that the CVs are on there last legs on my P1 Yaris.

It's been clunking on full lock for over a year and now I am getting steering wheel wobble in all driving phases.
I've rulled out unbalanced wheels (swapped front to back with no change).
I do not have a pulsing brake pedal.

The wheel bearings are tight i.e. no wobble all round.

So that just leaves me with the drive shafts and CVs.

How easy is it to change the CV joints as opposed to changing the full shaft?
Will I need gearbox oil?

Cheers for any pointers.

If I'm honest...this doesn't sound much like CV joints...
CV joint wear on a FWD car almost exclusively produces load clicking noises at low speed on full steering lock......

Could be tyre ovality.

I know.

I've had the loud clicking on full lock for a while.

As for tyre ovality - I swapped the fronts to the rears and have the same problems, it's definitely on the front.

It's either a strange CV joint or the lower control arm bushes.

Some mixed symptoms there mate.
So...

Wheel bearing (continuous droning with increased pitch against speed)
CV joints (loud clicking/knocking on full steering lock at low speed)
Top strut mountings (loud bonging/knocking during the turning)
Rear (the large round) void bush (if it uses that layout) loud knocking over bumps as the wheel physically goes back & forth.
Broken spring....loud knocking/bonging noises
Track rod end....knocking over bumps
Antiroll bar drop links/bushes...knocking over bumps/potholes
Track control arms/radius/tie rods general knocking

Note* none of these are usually associated with steering wheel 'wobble' at all speeds.

Martin,
The only thing on your list that I have is the clicking CV joint on full lock right but this is now starting to make itself apparent when starting off.

Everything else is okay.

The CV joint(s) need replacing anyway so I'll start on them, if they don't cure it I'll look at the lower arm (which has three bushes - 1 doughnut style, a track rod end type and a barrel type bush) fortunately the complete arm with bushes I can get for 43 €.

Yup...normally the rear 'donut' void bush that collaspes...very common on Polo's as well...seems to be a common design being used although obviously not exactly the same.
The road wheel can visibly been seen to 'go backwards' in the wheel arch as drive is taken up (helps to have someone drive the car as you stand along side).

Martin you were in the right area.
It turned out to be the LH front wheel.
Out of desperation I put a winter wheel on the front left corner and everything is now back to normal.

I could have sworn that I swapped that front wheel before, either I didn't or I have two duff wheels on the left.

Anyway I stuck my full winter set on, something I didn't want to do with the temps way above 7c but it's safer.

We tested the lower arm bushes by trying to drive off with the handbrake on (both fwd & in rev.) there is a bit of play (8mm) on one side and even less on the other.
