Anyone have any other bright ideas regarding timing the injector pump.
I have some issues regarding the timing that am trying to sort out. I purchased a dial and adapter which came as a three piece set (one being an extension), and followed instructions with the regard to engine (tdc) pump locked etc... but when i insert the dial it puts on at least 3-4mm pre-load before i am able to lock the dial in situ, yet all instructions I have found indicate 2-3mm? I am not sure what it will do if i have more pre-load?
I have timed it at least half dozen times with different readings 4 out of 6 times? What the heck......... Starts sometimes, sometimes not, smoke is still an issue so am sure timing is still not as it should be?
Advice appreciated.

One presumes patience isn't one of your virtues? If you follow the forum you will see it gets busier after 2000 when people have got home from work and sorted themselves out.
Maybe, but it was done to stir a response, be it a negative one. It is not the first time I have searched or requested this or similar advice here, with nothing to show? I am now understanding that when we start asking about tricky stuff like pump, turbo or engine innards, this area is beyond most here on this forum, no insult intended. I think the forum provides great advice in many areas, but some deep mechanical stuff, a little disappointing. Even when searching the wiki, how very little there is on the bosch injection pump, and what is there was taken from another site!

Most obvious thing to check that it is seated properly and 'tight' ie the O ring is making a snug fit. As you turn engine over it can push the DTI out rather than just move the rod.
Ok, so just had a read of your earlier threads/posts on this subject, tommin. Seems there's more to the story...
So back to basics. Find tdc, cam lobes up on no.1, put locking tool in back end of cam. Check tdc v mark on clutch cover (it's not on the flywheel) is perfectly in line with pointer. If not, loosen cam pulley bolt and turn engine to tdc mark. Lock cam bolt up again (45Nm). Recheck mark again. Valve timing must be spot on. Once happy that is right, move onto injection timing. Pump sprocket locking pin should fit in hole (at about 2 o'clock position), or be very close. Then you know pump timing is in right area. Remove cam and pump locks to check inj timing. Should be set to 0.8mm. Amount of preload on dti is irrelevant, as long as measurement is accurate. Should now start and run with little smoke. Any blue smoke is probably from your turbo, it isn't from the inj pump.

I timed mine by guessing basically only to find my local and very well thought of diesel pump specialists would have done it for an hours labour of 50 quid plus VAT (unless you paid cash) so I suggest you find your local injector specialist and get a quote.
ajsimmo thank you very much, that final part regarding the dti was the info i was chasing. All the tdc stuff i have, including the v notch of the clutch housing not the actual fly wheel, secure bolt in the pump etc...
It was this preload that had me baffled, watched all the vids and read, reread then read and watched them all again, they all stated the same 2-3mm?
Now to get the 0.8 setting (though the book for turbo state 1.0) I will try both if one does not work. As for the blue smoke, it is possible that the turbo may be suspect, but recently someone pointed out that leaking valves could cause it? Any idea on how to check the valves and turbo, i believe you are referring to the seal blowing on the turbo? where is this (seal) located and does the turbo need to come off? I have a spare turbo on the bench but do not know its working condition, as i have no idea how to confirm it is good.
Thanks again, much appreciated.
regards
tom

kit that was an excellent price, but here unfortunately that price would not even get you in the door. Repairs out here are thee most expensive repair prices i have ever known, and could would take several days if not weeks before you see your vehicle again.
I just put my other van in to the company shop where i just bought it from, the rear reversing sensors were not working, eight days later got it back, the wires were cut? this is not unusual here! Don't ask the price as it would blow you away.

Take all of inlet tract hosing off. Clean spotlessly. Take the breather hose out and route it to atmosphere/catch tank. Bung up the hole in the inlet tract where the breather hose connected.
Drive round a bit then some more.
Take hose off from turbo to inlet manifold. If its full of oil its the turbo
it's really easy to set your timing, if you are getting different firgures each time that could suggest the you aren't tighting the dti on to the adapter correctly, either too slack so it moves, but maybe even too tight so it binds and prevents a true reading
