Rocker Cover

Post by jokeruk »

Hi All,

I've got a leak coming from the 'bottom' two corners of the rocker cover on my JX (ie the manifold side). I've bought a replacement gasket, but it's not stopping the leak (and it's fairly substantial). It doesn't seem as though the gasket goes over the collar on the stud and possibly not seating properly on the head (which would explain the leak!). Is this right? I've not long got this engine running as a replacement, and so am completely baffled by it (never done anything with rockers on a JX).

Cheers,
Leigh

Hi Leigh,

I had (still have actually...albeit very slight) the same problem. I put a couple of extra washers under the nuts to push the cover down a bit harder...and used a smear of gasket sealer. I'm fairly certain my cover has a slight 'warp' and I expect I'll replace it at some point. A VW specialist told me this problem is not uncommon.

Hope that helps.

Cheers mark,

It just doesn't seem right to me with the way it sitsImage

That gap under my fingers (I'm pushing down on the gasket) that I've pointed to on the pic just doesn't go anywhere. Is the same on the other side of the head and u can't for the life of me figure out why is doing that. It's metal in the gasket and obviously a metal collar so that gap isn't going to change with the cover on.

This is the only thing stopping me from getting her on the road now!

Grrr

Well, for now I've replaced the shouldered studs with bolts (which is what was on the old engine) - Although I've made sure not to do them up too tight!
Seems to be holding so far
