LDA connection query.

Post by Richardwhite »

Hi folks :)

I'm hoping someone with far more mechanical know how than myself will be able to steer me straight with this one!

I had to replace the fuel lines on my JX engine last week and when doing so noticed that the LDA isn't actually attached to anything... I've had a read through the forum, wiki, t'internet etc and I think I've understood how the LDA works and that the pipe highlighted on the pictures below should be attached to the turbo somehow (the pipe shown in this tread that runs over the filter is the one thats missing - https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7966073" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )

However as yet I haven't found out exactly where the pipe and how it connects to the turbo, or with what type of pipe. I wondered if someone with a correctly fitted LDA might be able to take a few photos, or give a detailed explanation of what I need to connect and where I need to connect it to! I've checked that the diaphragm in the LDA is still sound using the method described here - https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=133600" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Any help would be great, I'm not sure if it'll do much to to improve the vans performance but it can't hurt...!

Many thanks everyone :)

Richard

If you look at the photos in my post"what's this wee pipe for" , that's the wee pipe you need. It sticks up on the inlet manifold. I saw mine when I had the air filter off, but you can also see it from underneath. My tube was approx double the length it needed to be, and stuck on the end of a bolt/stud in the middle of the waste gate! Not achieving a whole lot of boost there. Put it on the correct wee pipe, and no change, cos the LDA was banjaxed! Waiting for a new LDA from germany (a wee bit cheaper than from the UK). We can compare notes after on how much difference it makes. :lol: I know how fast I can get up the hill to my house as it stands, can I get up any quicker? :twisted:

As for whatever kind of pipe you need, mine is 4.5mm internal, and 9mm external, and it is black and rubbery. But hey, what are the chances of mine being correct? :?

Maybe someone with a properly put together engine will chip in below.

You're a star :) that's spot on! It was a photo of the other end (inlet manifold end) that I couldn't find and the photos on your post show it clearly :)
Now all I need is a bit of spare time to sort it out! I'll update if there's a noticeable change in performance once I've reattached it all :) I'm presuming that it'll need jubilee clips around the pipe ends to hold it all together or will the vacuum through the pipe be enough to hold it?
Thanks again buddy :)

Dunno about clips. Not seen any in any other photos. both connections have teeth on then to grip, but not a lip that is typically used when a clip is called for

Vacuum? No, it's a blower, and the tube takes positive air pressure from the high pressure created in the inlet manifold by the turbo, and blows in to the LDA canister. Within that the diaphragm moves down the can itself, extending the pushrod coming out of it, and turning the doobry on the pump.

Apparently it's only up to 8 or 12 psi, more than we can blow with our mouths, butmaybe not enough to blow the pipe off, even without a clip on it. You could maybe use a small hose clip, buy them off eBay? If it blows off. Of course it may not blow off if there is another problem further up the line between the air filter and the manifold. (My fingers are crossed for but I have a couple of the bits missing that I've discovered so far)

Good luck
