van wont start

Post by variety »

I stupidly left radio on when I came back from camping and flattened the battery... Got it powered up and tried again... nothing. All the lights are working, radio works, wipers everything, but nothing from the engine, won't even turn over. I checked the automatic gear selector to make sure contacts were clean, (yes she is an autobox) and no probs there. There is power to the circuits so I guess its not electrical(?). She was running sweet as a nut up until I parked her up and now nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd still be thinking electrical.
Maybe your battery doesnt have the oomph to turn the van over anymore.
Are the battery terminals nice and clean and tight?
Have you tried a jump start?
What is the voltage across your battery?
Have you checked the condition of the small spade connector on your starter motor? Put your voltmeter on this spade while someone else cranks the engine.
The contacts on the gear selector can be a bit out of line, have you tried wiggling the lever while trying to start?

Good luck.

If you flattened the battery it would take 24 hours on a charger to recharge it. My radio is smarter than me (not difficult). It switches itself off an hour after the engine is switched off. Worth thinking about.
