idle too fast.

Hi guys advice please. Following rebuild my engine starts a treat and ticks over very nicely and quite steadily. Once warmed however the tick over becomes too fast, and loud, drives well though but seems to be using a lot of fuel. It's almost as though the choke is kicking in once warm not the other way around? Is this possible?
Your help is appreciated. This is 2.0 Aircooled on twin solex.

It could be one of the chokes is not working. Remove the air filter start the engine from cold the choke flaps should gradual open and be fully open after 3 minutes.

Or, when you refitted engine, the accelerator outer cable wasn't located properly (anywhere along its length) leaving it partly open all the time. Check that first.

Will let you know how it goes my money is on the choke though as I've tried manualy manipulating it at the throttle link bar end.

Right gents. The plot thickens a little. Having taken off the air filter the choke flaps were in the open/upright position (I'm assuming from cold they should be closed) and didn't move at all whilst engine warmed up. The left side is very stiff and the right side flap will move slightly and with ease. It stops after about 5 mm of travel either way.
Previously a spacer was placed behind the spring and cup on the right side of the throttle linkage bar, this spacer was not the original and was too big so putting pressure on the left carb. It was noticed then that this stopped the choke flap from opening. It seems that this is still causing an issue and as a result I shortened the spacer again. There seems to be a lot of play between the choke housing and the carb on the left side which allows the pressure from linkage bar to effect the choke flap.

Hope that makes sense and any ideas? In summary it seems that the choke has been completely ineffective so why the fast idle when warm?

Probably idle speed was raised to counteract no choke. Its not the answer though.

Possibly it's just strange that the revs initially are fine, it's when it warms up that it becomes too quick. I guess initially i need to see if I can tighten up whatever it is that joins the choke housing to the carb itself in order to limit any pressure from the link bar. And then see if the choke will work at all.

Not all that strange. When an engine is stone cold it needs appreciably more fuel, or a lot more revs (you'd be surprised how much) just to get even a reasonable idle. Once warm that can equate to the engine revving like mad sitting in traffic.

You can only get a correct idle by setting this when the engine has fully warmed up, and then work on getting the actual choke right from cold starts. In that order.

In the case of 'twin' carbs, they are essentially one carb, split into two and should therefore operate together, as one.

Member Sarran is very comfortable with 2.0 Aircooled motors and can probably advise you on getting them set up correctly. He even has a video on youtube showing how.
