I guess what im asking is can i stick one of these panels on with that stuff
http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares_Sid ... tartPage=1 (assuming metal around where it fixes to is solid)

or does it need to be welded to be structurally sound?

im very new to any kind of body work and just trying to learn ....

Please weld it. It was welded when it came out the factory and that's the best way to fix it if the panels need repair or replacement.

Ok, didnt think folks on here would like this stuff ;), - when camping season is over gonna take all the units out and get decent pictures from inside and out.

Not gonna tackle this till about mid october though so will post pictures then -- gives me some time to practice welding!!

The outside underneath is solid but the b pillar inside where it attaches to the floor and battery box is pretty rusted and needs welding

aye that needs cutting out, the floor closures behind the middle seam on the side will be shot as will the b post inner and jp (testable) i would suggest that the rear jp arm mount may need a bit of a look at as well , good luck and nice clear pickies ta
