Anyone want a lesson in servicing, Sussex

Post by fairwynds »

Morning all
I've gained a great deal of support and knowledge from this brilliant forum so in an effort to 'give something back'
I will be instructing a friend and assisting him with his first service of his 2.1 petrol water boxer engine and braking system on Monday 5th May.
If anyone would like to attend for tea, coffee and a few helpful hints and 'how to's ' then this will be from about 9.30am in Burgess Hill (home of VW Heritage). Pm me for details.
I have about 25 years experience with vehicle maintenance and have owned my own T25 for 12 years.

We will be covering just the basics of:

Safety when working with jacks and axle stands etc (inc emergency roadside wheel changing using standard VW jacks)
Front and rear brake cleaning, servicing and adjustment
Brake fluid check/bleed/change
Suspension component inspection and common wear issues on T25s
Fuel filter inspection (will only be changing this if required)
Air filter
Oil filter
Oil change
Gearbox plugs (filler and drain)
CV bolts (checking for security)
Spark plugs
HT leads
Rotor arm
Distributor cap
Carb cleaning
Alternator output check
Battery checks
Fuel hose checks
Vacuum hose checks
The principles of engine timing
....and anything else that crops up on the day! (I'm bound to have forgotten something here, but this will be a basic lesson!)

I do have a teaching qualification so would like to think that I can impart some knowledge to anyone who might be anxious about learning there way around these old buses... :ok

So if you have a spare couple of hours and fancy talking VWs until your ears bleed (!) next Monday, pm me and let me know.
Usual blurb about weather, max numbers and health and safety applies! :D

In meantime, here's hoping for a grand weekend....

A friend and I sometimes do them in Warwickshire during the Summer - usually outside Rugby's public library. By the time we've finished, we have quite a crowd. We get everything from those with no knowledge at all to those with moderate understanding but we've never been stumped on any question yet. We generally create two glaring MOT failures on the car and divide them into small teams to see if they can spot the faults. Always a lot of fun. :D

Love it! We have MOT testers near here that would no doubt fail miserably!

I'm in the process of buying a T25 and would be most interested if anyone is willing to do this in mid-Wales next summer (once I've had the bodywork and a new engine sorted!)
