chassis no confusion

Post by mickeyflyn »

I've been trying to identify my bus so I know if it's classed as early or late as buying parts has me confused.
the V5 says first registered 04/01/84 and the vin/chassis 25DH038514. I've looked at wiki, vw heritage and brikwerks but can't make sense of the information. Can anyone tell me plz

I understood the DF to be the first water cooled version, followed by the DG. It was the DG that had an 'early' or 'late' version (changed in 1985?) but I'm sure someone who can clarify will be along shortly, after all, this place is full of anoraks! :rofl

Hello - not a qualified geek, but I have had the same issues as you determining parts. I have a DG engine in a van built in '85. It was first registered in ''86 though, so initially I assumed it'd be an up-dated model, but no... it's the older parts all the way. 1983 saw the air-cooled engines replaced, 1985 saw the next round of updates... I found out mine was the older spec when determining which exhaust system to order by checking out images online and comparing them to what I had, you should be able to do the same. On the parts sites which allow you to order by VIN number the parts listed should be correct. Also, I have found VW Heritage very helpful on the phone too.

Good luck

Tim

Looks like the original engine. October was DF 0049-0079.
Not unknown for vans to hang around before being sold. Waiting for the next boat to the UK then waiting for a dealer to order one. If it was for a camper converter then waiting to be converted then they had to sell it. A lot of people we sold vans too wanted them for the air cooled engines a lot of the regular customers wouldn't buy them when the water cooled engines came in, they went off and bought something else.
