ALH pump on an AHU? can i?

Post by hotpod »

i have a fuel pump problem ( in another thread) and have just been offered a vw caddy with a broken cam belt for not much money. it has an ALH engine which is still 90hp but the pump, although it looks the same, has an entirely different number.
does anyone know the difference ( apart from the wires all going to one plug instead of two ) and can any one tell me with authority if i can stick it on my AHU and expect it to run?

i know that the ALH has higher torque at lower revs than the AHU but if that all it is i dont see it being a problem. the bonus would be a pump which is 6 years younger than the broken one.

as usual, any and all help much appreciated.

Yes you can, I thought about this a while back. There is even a step by step guide here :D

One note the ALH pump and 1z/AHU look very different with the main difference being the drive pulley flange and pulley itself, probably better option to have your original pump repaired/rebuilt

yes, i read lloydys link and dont think i will be taking that route. could be an even bigger can of worms.
will definately keep it stock.
any idea on rebuild costs? the company in cornwall who do it quoted me 450-600 to strip it down and rebuild plus the costs of any replacement parts on top.. a new one is only £1200. ( or is a new one from vw a recon anyway?)
i will phone all the local scrappys and see if anyone has a decent AHU which hasnt had any fuel pipes removed yet.

Seem pretty good prices, and had a good rep on the net when you have a search.

they do look good. good prices too.
i got the feeling that the cornish chaps i spoke to have the monopoly in the county and charge accordingly.
who knows.
i will see if diesel bob prehaps have an exchange unit ready to go.

ive just been offered a good pump off a 99 passat which looks identical on the surface but the part number is 028 130 115A ( the AHU is 028 130 115M )
ive looked it up and its off an AFN or AVG engine which is 110hp.
will this one work or shall i just be patient and wait for the correct one?

Update:
the van is now running sweet with the AFN/AVG pump which is a straight fit , the only obvious difference being that the wires to the two electrical connections are longer.
i phone MV Engineering and spoke to a very helpful chap (Mazz?) who said that it should work fine and he was right.
thank goodness, as it was starting to get silly.
MOT today hopefully.
im excited.
