Gearbox selection problem

Post by voodoopenguin »

Last week I suddenly found I had no gears available, it was permanently in neutral. Taken on a flatbed to our local garage after the RAC man had a quick look for anything obvious. The garage left a message on our answer phone saying "gear linkage reconnected which has got 3, 4 and reverse back but no 1 and 2. Problem in gearbox." I will pop in and see them this morning, does anything come to mind as to what they should be looking for?

Excuse the lack of knowledge but I think I have a 1.9 petrol engine although it runs on gas.

Presumably, they tried to see if gears could be selected by hand, via the shaft coming out of the box? If so, then I would think the box itself is ok.
But,have they done what I did, putting the linkage bracket back but on the wrong side of the gearbox flange?
I couldn't select 2/4th gears because I had put it back incorrectly, from my replacing the clutch. VERY easy to do too  it's in the WIKI, which might help you.

ok disconnect linkage at the gearbox
ball will be fully out of the box that is 3rd and 4th gear plane
push the ball into box by 7mm then backwards (toward engine) you have selected first gear
get in and start engine with clutch pedal depressed then when engine started let the clutch out and see if you are in forward gear if not then relay lever in the gearbox has probably broken - try again by pushing the ball forward in the same plane, 2nd gear, if no gear then relay lever is broken
if you get the gears then it is a linkage adjustment issue reassemble and set up

the above may be what the garage have already done to provide the diagnosis you have received
