grinding noise

Post by jeffdub »

hi all , ive got a grinding noise coming from my nsr wheel when I go round a right hand corner , all cv joints have been changed and there's no rubbing of the drum on the back plate , I've checked the wheel and there's slight play in the bearing but not much, any ideas please ?

took it for an mot and asked the tester if he could have a look for me at the same time , van passed the mot :ok and he said I had a leak from the gearbox and one of the bearings could be shot ? I serviced the box at the weekend and also changed the seals where the shaft joins the gearbox , still got the noise , any ideas anyone ?

You're absolutely right to be concerned. Grinding noise = wear (somewhere). All I can suggest (off the top of my head) is to get underneath and starting at the gearbox end, check those CV joints really carefully (inner and outers) and ensure that no bolts are coming loose. Get hold of the shafts and really give them a pull around. If all checks out ok, it could still be a bearing (or hub nut not tightened up enough). Beyond that, sometimes the wear has to get worse before you can actually find it.

For the record, I once bought four new CV joints online, all of which began to fail inside six months. If you're sure of their pedigree, then that may not be an issue here. GSF for instance, do two grades I think. The only one thats any good is the Lobro one.

Loose hub nut perhaps....not that obvious as they often appear tight but move on the splines. These things need to be very tight, a half inch power bar often doesn't give enough leverage.
