Reoccurring knocking noise
So I have this knocking noise. We had it about a year ago and it would come and go. Then it went for a good 10 months.
Now it's back. From the back left I think. In time with speed and only under power (nothing when coasting).
Took her out today and had the noise for 30mins then suddenly disappeared.
Could this be tappets (although would they cause constant knocking while engine running?)? Rear cv? Or maybe driveshaft, although no loss of power.
Off to Isle of Wight Thursday so just want to settle my mind.
Here's a vid of the knocking.
Thanks in advance.

Have you checked the drive shaft hasn't come loose?

Re: Reoccurring knocking noise
CV bolts is the usual culprit especially the outer ones.

whs^^^^^
recently had exactly the same problem, but replaced inner and outer cv joints just so I knew that it was another job done, now cured.

Re: Reoccurring knocking noise
I had something similar for months. Only under power and on right hand bends.
Tried everything - even put padding around all cables etc because I thought they may be knocking against chassis.
Eventually, found that one of the 4 bolts on the gearbox mount towards the front of the van was missing. Replaced it and hey presto no more knocking.

Re: Reoccurring knocking noise
Thanks for all the suggestions. Soooo, I had the back wheels up this morning and turning them we're getting a pretty ugly noise from the gearbox
I think I might need to get it rebuilt by Aidan.
Has anyone else had this noise before? Would you risk driving it?

Re: Reoccurring knocking noise
here was some diagnostics I did when I had some knocking
https://vimeo.com/channels/264094
turned out it was a drive shaft failure simply

Re: Reoccurring knocking noise
your's sounds alot more broken, so I wouldnt drive it, if you dont have too
I didnt change the drive shaft myself, but I believe it is very easy
u need one of the gearboxers to comment

Reoccurring knocking noise
Well! I'm not sure if I should admit my idiocy. Gearbox noise in the above video is because we had in her partly in gear (I'm ashamed). And I've just got under the van and one of the cv bolts is loose (could be turned with my fingers). So that explains everything.

Thanks for the update, and well done for fessing up. So many wouldn't have bothered or had the humility to admit a moment of slight numptiness that affects us all from time to time! Glad you found it - easily sorted too. Have a great, and knockless, trip!
