OBD II on an 89 van

Post by Wing Commander »

Ok may be a silly question but does an 89 van have an OBDII socket?

No OBDII is from the mid 90's, VW started using it from 1999.

The current style plug came in around '92 with the Golf etc. You can use VCDS but not sure if its fully 'OBDII' compliant in the US sense.

That was EOBD in Europe and OBD1 in USA slightly different pin configurations they where also using two plug ALDL sockets and round 38 pin connectors.

I assumed the OP was probably referring to the physical plug, not the version of the protocol. Of course pinouts vary between manufacturers and over time, though VW seem to have kept the important pins the same from the outset.

Well he did ask for OBD II, I was thinking he might want to use a generic OBD II reader which doesn't read all EOBD codes.

I must confess that my experience of generic ODB readers is zero, I tend to use software, VCDS for VAG engines and two or three others for Subaru. I do have a Scangauge which is definitely 'OBDII' only. I've thankfully therefore been spared the complications of other manufacturers.

There not always brilliant often don't read all the codes and OBD II doesn't always power up from earlier OBD sockets.

Apart from the physical 'OBD' 16-pin connector, I've not been able to establish *any* standards used by 'all' manufacturers. Subaru numbers the pins opposite to VW, 1=16, 16=1 !

There isn't one apart from about 2000 everybody must be able to read emission relevant codes via the same OBD pinouts.
Pins 1 and 16 is where some problems lie which is why some scanners won't power up.
