CV Joints allen bolts loose! Tourque figures?

Post by bradcab »

Been giving the crew cab a going over, and some of the bolts on the cv joints were finger loose!

Im still waiting for my big book of lies (haynes manual) to come through.

Any one know what the tourque settings should be, if any.

Or should they be cleaned up and put it with a bit of lock tight and nipped up?

cheers.

Can use Loctite if you want, but I do the hex cap-head ones up to 28-30 lb-ft and the 12-point spline drive ones (preferred) to 33 lb-ft as Bentley and others give two figures (presumably because they were found to loosen).

As long as the threads, underheads and all mating surfaces are clean to start with, they should be OK at 30 lb-ft, but do them all up to about 20 lb-ft first, then go around again. I think peeps trap all tons of grease and all sorts of crap between the various parts that need pulling up, or just don't star pattern tighten them in stages or even torque them up. Very common and plenty of horror stories but usually just a nuisance...

They latterly fitted hardened knurled flat lock washers, but they get lost easily and don't come in most of the CVK kits, though the new spline-drive bolts do. Note that syncro front inner bolts are 2mm longer than the rears.

You did a good thing there spotting them loose, its quite common and a right pain if the joints does come off!

IIRC the correct figure on the 12spline is 35NM NOT lbft.

If they're loose then replace them - the threads may be trashed. You will only be able to get 12spline bolts now - about 60p each from GSF.

Bentley says:

Section 42.2 rear suspension components:-

Socket head screws with lock washers 45 Nm (33 ft lb)

However, under 40.15, Front Suspension Components [Syncro]:

35Nm (26ft lb)

hence the differences I mentioned.

As I said, 30 ft-lb should do you, I've not had one break or come loose at 33 (yet :) ), but have always re-fitted splines and thrown away any gouged old hex cap heads ones

Oh, only had three 4-days holiday away this month and this coming weekend too... Devon Green Lanes.

Perhaps you should get an allotment or two Thom, then you'd really know what getting out was all about :D
