gear shift wont engage reverse.
Hello. I have a subaru coversion in my 82 T25. The van has a rebuilt air cooled gearbox with refurbished rod linkages. I have set the adjustment as per haynes. The gear change is rubbosh and wont engage reverse. What am I doing wrong?
Re: gear shift wont engage reverse.
The manual is a bit confusing and there are two versions of shift rods. The adjustment is the same for both though. I have to think this through because I am familiar with left hand drive. Sitting in the driver's seat, selecting 3rd and 4th should require zero, side to side movement. If you are having to pull it towards you to select 3rd or 4th it is out of adjustment.
You adjust it at the rear section of rod. There is a clamp on the end rod that clamps around the splined section of rod. I would recommend crawling under the front and having someone work the shifter while you watch from below to give you an idea of how it works. I would then crawl under the back and watch at the transmission to see how the movement is translated into the transaxle. It is usually only 1 or 2 splines either way to get you working. Reverse lockout is built into the shifter box below the floor up front.
