195/80/15 tyres will they fit?

Post by sciroccotune »

Hi guys,

Well fresh back from another good trip to the lakes and I was thinking about some tyres slightly more suited to damp grass than my current commercial rates tyres. (Luckily fellow campers helped give me a ouch. :) )

I fancy some chunky tyres for my landrover that has 195/80/15 tyres and that made me think I could get some new tyres for the LR and some 15inch steel wheels for the van and make good use of the no longer needed LR tyres.

Question is does any one run 195/80/15 on a 2wd westy?

Any one got pictures?

Thank all:)

They'll fit on 7J rims fine and look ok if you have the higher springs found on many Caravelles but a better bet is 195/70/15 as the speedo will be almost bang on using that size and they're ok steering-wise. I had this discussion with a time-served tyre fitter and he suggested 80s but said to try 70s first. I stayed with them. Gives a sufficiently chunky look without problems.

The downside is that they're heavier and take more effort to wheel around when they're off. Then theres the spare wheel carrier - a spare that size won't fit. I just carry a regular one for emergencies. Pic below is 195/65/15. The 70s look chunkier still. Merc rims ofcourse. Popular choice in Germany. Some wheels can foul sliding door but my offset is 25 and they clear nicely. Also 195/70/15 a common size amongst light commercials (more around) so you can often strike a good deal. I just bought four (new) 8-ply for £120 but I always buy at least 18 months ahead to get best price. Michelins at that.
