Whats going on with those arches? Some bits missing?

From what I understood they are original Volkswagen (though for the South African version), so I think they shouldn't cause problems..

I know when I did work on that side (utility side if you like) I flared those holes slightly to ensure that any water that gets in there can run out easily. No idea if it works but did it anyway. The Caravelle windows can leak also. Mine was rotted at the floor and its never had a fridge in it either - a common source of water/damp issues allegedly.
