ignition coil?
Hi volks!
Any help would be appreciated much!
My 1986 1.9dg panelvan is having problems getting started the ignition lock has no function now just steeringlock it starts on a switch and starter button mounted on steering column coweling I replaced the battery for a secondhand one it was starting intermittently then when turns over ran great now it will.only start with aid of jump.pack the guy who set up my hot leads and firing order thinks the firing pattern is 1342 standing behind the van he claims when he takes spark plug out of number one and turn engine over no spark but if turn crank by hand we get spark.I ordered a new ignition solenoid today and regulator do you think.this is the problem?
Thanks in advance

Re: ignition coil?
If it starts fine with a "jump pack" then I'd suggest that the state of the battery would be a good first call.
Do you have a known 'good' battery that you can temporarily install to see what effect that has?
And/or do you have a multimeter so you can measure battery voltage with engine not running, and with engine running?
Also, what do you mean by .....

Do you mean the solenoid on the starter motor and the voltage regulator on the alternator - or are we talking about something else ??steviewright wrote:a new ignition solenoid and regulator

E D I T = Doh, MidLifeCrisis beat me to it !! Great minds think alike though
Hi Stevie, I am guessing that was written on a phone or summat. It was very hard to read so for future readers / answerers, I have re-done it for ya.
OK, firstly, this bit is odd = "He claims when he takes spark plug out of number one and turn engine over, there is no spark but if turn crank by hand we get spark." because on turning the engine over by hand you would not be able to do it fast enough to get a spark
Anyway, if it starts up with a jump pack, it's 90% certain that this second hand battery is goosed. The "no spark" on cranking is a clue here, not enough "Ummph" to run the starter and the ignition.
Try substituting a known good battery from a mates car or summat and see what happens. TAKE CARE THOUGH = not all batteries have their +ve and -ve terminals the same way around. DOUBLE check you have it correct before connecting up !! Earth strap to -ve on the battery (sorry, I know you knew that
)
After that though, it is worth checking the connections at each end of ALL those big heavy starter cables though, not forgetting the earth strap that goes from the front of the gearbox to the chassis (often overlooked that one, because it is right underneath the van
)
PS =
No

My 1986 1.9dg panel van is having problems getting started. The ignition lock has no function now, it is just steering lock. It starts on a switch and starter button (mounted on steering column cowling).
I have replaced the battery for a second hand one.
It was starting intermittently then when turns over ran great. (sorry, don't really understand - need to totally re write that ?)
Now it will only start with aid of jump pack. The guy who set up my hot (HT ?) leads and firing order thinks the firing pattern is 1342 standing behind the van.
He claims when he takes spark plug out of number one and turn engine over, there is no spark but if turn crank by hand we get spark.
I ordered a new ignition solenoid and regulator today, do you think this is the problem?

Which actually confirms that you may be correct with this.

And as no one has mentioned it the firing order is 1-4-3-2

Re: ignition coil?
Thanks guys lesson learnt will not use my phone on here (last time( I know very little about engines clearly! But am learning slowly . So to clarify
The engine fired up a week ago but needed accelerator pressed or it died
It would only start after pressing the little brass lever a few times on the Carb?
After doing this daily something strange happened as the van started and no.longer cut out but ran for over an hour everything was working fine until I left it overnight then.it wouldn't run
I have tried a good battery but its not having it:( to.make matters worse the "mechanic" who looked at it for me owes me money and wanted to work on van I regret this bow as he is polish and his English gets worse than mine when he is questioned on why he has done what he done which is stripped the Carb changed the firing order and told me to buy new solenoid its not firing up at all now shall.I try the solenoid or just swap garages .thanksall

Re: ignition coil?
it reads like you have some issues with the carb too.
pressing the" brass lever " is probably the acc. pump?
that being the case I would ensure the idle cut off solenoid is working
that the idle jet is clear
that the choke works as intended.

Re: ignition coil?
Thanks guys i gonna move it in the morning to.my work
Kevtherev the van was running fine til the idiot stripped the Carb pierburg23e and from what I can gather the ht leads are wrong now as is dizzy cap I fitted my new coil and now it has a spark off the battery but needs re setting up properly I am confident that if I had have just changed coil first this would be fine now
so if I read this right I need to have firing order 1432 1 being closest to passenger seat 4 closest to drivers seat 3 closest to nearside rear lights and 2 the other one? And find tdc when 1 is highest? I.really do.appreciate help and advice maybe pics?
