1.6TD - what's this wee pipe on inlet manifold?

Spotted this when I was fitting new snorkel pipes and had the air filter out. A wee tube sticking out of what i believe is the inlet manifold, visible when you take out the air filter canister or look from underneath. My concern is because it seems to have spat oil over a nearby pipe. The photos below show the view from underneath the engine. The bit in question is the shiny little tube, sticking out on it's own. To orientate you, the jubilee clip is on the pipe from the turbo to the manifold, and the pipe with oil over it is I think the breather from just behind the (non-functioning!) LDA.

It looks like it should have a pipe on it connecting it to summat else... What else? Why? The more I look the more I seem to find missing from this engine . But it did get me away for two weeks there, only shelled out £25 to have the clutch pipe reflared and refitted, and £20 to have the exhaust welded back on in that time

hi, I haven't seen that on mine, maybe its for an aftermarket boost gauge. either way i would blank it off.

Thanks for that. Does that suggest that the oil is coming from somewhere else then? Can't investigate just at the moment - took it to the garage this evening for them to investigate the grinding squealing noise coming from the back when rolling in neutral...

How best to blank it off?

The pipe is the outlet for the boost pressure hose to the LDA. Perhaps that's why it is non-functioning?

Look at the injector pump and find the LDA , on the canister shaped part (round cylinder maybe 2" long and 1.5" across) there is a corresponding nipple.

Connect these this to the nipple in your pic.

Any diesel place will sell the pipe or even local GSF or local motor factors.

Think its about 3.5mm , just ask for braided injector leak off pipe.

Hmm, My LDA is connected to something else, I had a look before I took it to garage. Seemed to be that the pipe from the LDA went down under the air intake pipes and into the bit that looked like a wee black plastic donut on the turbo. I'll obviously have to post a photo when I get the van back.

As for the LDA, when I take the pipe off and push in the plunger, put a thumb over the pipe connection, the plunger comes straight back out again. Apparently it isn't supposed to until I take my thumb off. So whatever it's connected to, it appears it's unfortunately not working.

Again, this does leave me wondering what kind of Horlicks is in my engine bay?

So, this is where my LDA pipe is connected to. Its the black rubber hose coming out of the middle of the black painted part. Looking at my JK manual and the diagram, is this the waste gate, and should the LDA be connected to it?

Take it off the wastegate and put it on the lda

Should anything different be connected to the waste gate? I hope not, cos if there should be I have another pipe connected to the wrong place!

So, put the pipe from the LDA to my mystery pipe.

Wonder where that oil on the breather pipe is coming from? Better have another poke around.

Be nice if my LDA even half works...

Pipe replaced from stud on wastegate (I'm not kidding) to outlet on intake manifold. No change to performance, looking for LDA to replace, but wife says we can't afford £180 this month. And she's right of course. The reason we have a £5000 camper, and not a £50,000 motorhome. And we just bought a new awning too.

Hey RogerT, your pipe should definitely go from the spigot thingy on the intake manifold to the top spigot on the LDA. When you put your foot down, the intake manifold creates a bit of a vacuum, this acts through the pipe and moves the LDA shaft (a bit like distributor vacuum advance) to provide more fuel in the injector pump (it may also advance the timing a bit??). My LDA seemed not to be working, replaced it with a new one from Brickwerks and the change to the performance was amazing. The camper moves along really well now. Still not great on steep Welsh hills, but pretty good. If you get a new LDA, make sure the long pipe from the intake manifold is in good nick....any leaks will prevent the LDA working properly. Oh, and the bottom spigot on the LDA is left open to air....atmospheric pressure to make the vacuum bit work. Hope this helps! Cheers, GeoffH

I have a cunning plan as regards my LDA. I'll take out my LDA (not doing anything anyway), cut the bottom (end nearest the plunger) off, and see what can be done with the likely leak inside. Then ... find a way to stick it back together Zipties/solder/tape/all three/none of the above? Nothing to lose eh?

Don't hold you're breath, no idea when this will be. Sometime when I'm left unsupervised for too long...

LDA removed, advice received from dieselkontor about replacing diaphragm, which they sell in batches of five. Cut off the closing ring, replace diaphragm, and fit bolts all the way around to close it. Voila!

We'll see.
