Awnings

I have seen a royal traveller 3 which I believe is the square one with Ali poles. Any experience with these?

We have an rt3. Only had it 3 years. Dont pay more than £200 new. We went for it as we wanted a more traditional shape. All metal poles (steel not ali) make it very heavy. Nice look though. Be careful to get a lhd or rhd version depending on what you have. Doesnt matter if you dont put the inner tent up. I think with all awnings, the real secret is how you attach it to your van. I use a pole and clamps which is a bit fiddly with the high top.

Think I may get one of the outwell event shelters with sides that way will not have to attach to the van.

When we first got our camper I inquired at a couple of campsites about using a tunnel tent as an awning and was told that I would have to pay double fees!! So we tried an Outdoor Revolution XL drive away awning which was awful, we sold that and purchased a "retro" metal pole type awning which we love. The thicker awning material is far superior to the thinner Nylon that you get with most modern tents. Just Campers do similar awnings but I am not sure which material they use for the "flysheet"

It looks great, I think I am going away for a week so will look at a few on my travels andake up my mind I think. Shall I head for Cornwall or grower and Brecon Beacons that's the question. Just me and my two children wife has to work bless her

The rt3 is very similar to this but comes in lightweight tent fabric these days - no where near as tough as the canvas but much lighter. Pros and cons as ever.
Ps, as a westcountry boy, I'd avoid cornwall in august! full of people from chelsea.
But then I am from Devon. Love the brecons.

I am picking them up from woolacombe as they are there this week, I think I may pop over into gods country for a few days. First big run for our van, fingers crossed

We used to have a Royal Traveller Awning but the poles started to break after a few years (it was 4 years old)
Have now bought a Outwell Mountain Road from friends of ours. It has a zipped in ground sheet to make it 100% waterproof.
We did get a bit of water coming in with the Royal if the flaps were not secure or it was windy.
Also as we now have a dog, Basil can't escape under the tent with the zipped in ground sheet.
Outwell are more sturdy and have thicker poles. Recommended.

Just purchased an Outwell Paradise Road yesterday. First trip out at the weekend so will let you know what its like. Bargain (I think) price from Norwich Camping (purchased in store).
