Re: Stuck in France! Advice for mechanics please
Thanks all - it is extremely frustrating - when it was 'fixed' it sounded nice - not ticky at all, and apart from the initial lumpiness of not having an automatic choke it drove fine. It actually works - except when this mystery something stops it!
At that point it wasn't loaded up at all - no trailer, just two people in it, no camping gear.
I'll contact the mechanic now and see if he has any last ideas. I'll check that he's cleaned the fuel filter and mention the push rods. They say they are getting fuel to the spark plugs.
This morning is my last chance - I've some quotes coming in on Shiply and I'll just have to bite the bullet and ship it home.

Thanks Flyingchunk - I see what you mean.
Are these breather pipes on the carburettor - or elsewhere? It would be good if I can offer mechanic specific advice. I have a broad grasp of these issues, but lack detail in various places!
When I had the old carburettors there were all kinds of pipes in a terrible state, and when we were trying to fix them we cleaned out the breather pipe. I now have new Webbers which have been balanced here in France, so should be fully operational.

Re: Stuck in France! Advice for mechanics please
Hello,
Just got home...
I've left a message on your phone.
The bad news is that I am 600 kms away....
However the good news is that I'm available...
There is the possibility of recovering you with a land rover and trailer..
I've got all the bits and tools here...
If it runs a bit.. then goes 'pop' and stops.. then it may still be an electrical problem....
Something silly ..like the coil giving up when under load..
The Hall effect ignition system is not my favorite... with lots of leads and fragile (after 34 years) little plugs.
E D I T:..Just a thought.. there is a brown lead going to an earth tag where the 13 mm nut clamps the distributor body to the motor..ideally placed to collect dirt and oil..worth doing a continuity test...
Ring me....
Cordialement,

Crikey - feel like I'm experiencing a soap opera on fast-forward! From despair to elation and back again on the hour every hour.
Sarran has been brilliant and is chatting to mechanic, probably right now.
I have the doom scenarios all sketched out and ready to implement - but perhaps Sarran can be the the last minute substitute that will completely change the game!

Wow. I've just googled the locations.
This story is thrilling!
Not least because it could have been me up until yesterday.
Keep us all posted. Warms the heart to hear how this community is ready to help others in need.
Sarran... You are a man among men... I salute you.

Hello,
Well that was fun....
I rang Cedric at the garage..we discussed intermittant electrical faults...inspected the rotor arm... cracked..swapped in a spare..(€ 4.90)..
Listened to the engine running over the phone....
Sounds good to me...
Hope you can get home now...
