Thermostat issues 2.0CU engine

Post by tobzman »

Hi all

I finally got round to replacing my supposedly broken thermostat on my 2.0CU yesterday. Basically my old stat was always at full extension even when cold so I concluded it was broken.
I fitted a known good unit but that also simply ended up stretched to full extension once connected to the airflap cable. The flap moves ok if you pull the cable and I lubricated the bits of the operating rod you can see and also the cable pulley. I also tried taking a turn out of the flap return spring but then it didn't have any tension left in it.

After removing my old stat I shook it and could hear the fluid still inside, although I haven't tested it yet I think it will turn out my old one was ok.

Do stats simply get 'tired' over time? Is there something else I can do to free everything up a bit and give the stat a chance of getting it all moving?

Cheers

Cheers.

I bought mine second hand from a user on this forum called spannerrack (George). I also saw one on ebay last week which ended for about £13.
Unfortunately the stat is now obsolete so forums/autojumble/ebay is your best bet for finding one. I believe some of the old beetle stats can be used but there are some length variations to watch out for.

Have a read of this link for help:
