Re-chroming

Post by New Kentish Campers »

I have an amount of various steel metal parts that need re-chroming. Does anyone know of a good firm that they have used please?

What I do know is: DON'T go for Copper/Nickel/Chrome. If you know your chemistry, this combination onto steel puts the Base material as the sacrificial part and all you will be left with (long term) is the nickel/Chrome skin!

I was told this by a professional chrome bumper restorer, It's why Jaguar bumpers suffered so badly after they started using copper as a cheaper (faster-coating and easier to polish) base coating instead of the traditional Nickel on Chrome, which is harder work to "cut" back to get a mirror finish.

It's as much about the skill of the polisher, as it is about the plating process.

I am no expert in the process, but was told that the reason rust was appearing in my bumper after less than 12 months was because it had not had a copper coat put on before the nickel. That was also by a professional plater. http://cumbriametalfinishingltd.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; they did an excellent job of my bumper & hubcaps

Re-chroming

I've dealt with RCJ Metal Finishers north of London for metal plating in the past (not chrome but I know it is one of the finishes they do) - they're friendly and were a lot cheaper than some of the quotes I got from other places.
