Short Gear Box Syndrome

Post by jonnydub »

Hey Guys,

I have fitted a AGG 2.0 to to my bus and I'm using a 4 speed DK gearbox. However this is to short to fit on the engine directly. I have been advised that RJES does sell a kit for £50 but I've been able unable to get hold of him to order it.

Does anyone know of anywhere where I can get hold of a kit?

Thanks

J

Yeah, figured it out. I was using the wrong gearbox mount. The original DK mount is shorter than the diesel so it wasn't reaching the gearbox. Ordered a diesel mount so hopefully it'll fit.

I'm no expert but I've seen four different patterns of (watercooled*) 2WD front gearbox mounting bracket, 'long' (4-speed) and 'short' (5-speed), and as the WBX sits higher than the diesel, the petrol mount is 'shallower' than the diesel one. Total permutations = 4. Also petrol and diesel have different rear shift rods, and of course 4 and 5 speed are different at the front. So, if mixing and matching, choose your components with care, as its possible to fit a combination that sort of works, but not very well..

E D I T: * thx Adian.

Thanks for the reply's.

Yes, here are the two different bolt patterns I've encountered

Saw a previous post (http://archive.club8090.co.uk/viewtopic ... b85eeb628c)that another member was able to modify the diesel mount to fit the three bolt pattern. Here is a pic of this mod which I found on the Samba

I will send RJES another email and call him on next week if he hasn't replied

Thanks Guys

Hello, I am pretty sure that is my photo on the Samba and that is a stock diesel mount attached to a DK transmission, air cooled. I had the opposite problem when I installed the 091/1 gearbox. To keep from moving my engine back, I had to shorten the transmission bracket by about an inch. Here is a picture of the modified mount. For some reason, I also had to use the other set of chassis mounting bolts. Something must be off center between versions. Since the bolt patterns are different you could probably come up with an intermediate plate from aluminum that would allow you to use the 091/1 mount with the DK transmission. It would be fairly thick and inch or so and require some countersunk holes for the transmission stud nuts.

You will also need to come up with some way to adapt the shift rod. It works completely different between the 091 and the 091/1 It is solvable. mark

E D I T, it may not matter, but the diesel trans bracket is different than the Aircooled trans bracket. The diesel bracket locates the transmission up from the air cooled install. The diesel engine from a side view appears to be down at the pulley end. So you need to pay attention to the nose trans height too when making or adding an adapter. Here is a side view of how the diesel was mounted compared to the air cooled.
