Fair enough, I'm s bit cash strapped at the mo so looking for any angle to get by on a shoe string . You mention changing the stat for a 80 degree one. What's the standard one rated as?

Also, I read over on brickyard about a guy who was having hot running AAZ issues. He found out the water pump was rotating the wrong way although I couldn't deduce from his posts which was the correct way, CCW or CW.

From what I can remember the standard stat opens at around 87 degrees, 80 degree stat just allows water to flow round the system a bit sooner so helps a bit but its not the full solution.
The trouble is, when the oil gets hot, its hard to get rid of the temperature, and it then heats the water up as well.
there are other people that make oil coolers, but its going to take some messing about to get everything you need, and you will have to fabricate mounting brackets to hold the cooler in the position that you decide to put it.
Have a look in the for sale area, and see if anyones got a set up for sale.
Lots of people are converting to TDI power now which does'nt require the external oil cooler, so you might be lucky

Good call, this member has something that might do, what do you think? Here's what he said about it...

[i]"Oil Cooler setup, based around a Setrab 13 row front mounted cooler, Mocal thermostatic take off, all hoses and fittings included ready to fit and go. Was used by me and worked very well.
£150."

Any idea what a Setrab 13 is?

Apologies for asking stupid questions, a quick search revealed what a setrab 13 is. I found another member offering an oil cooler, this time a Mocal. Slightly concerned about buying used, missing bits etc but beggers can't be choosers.

You need 19 row at least but could buy that set and Dongle for a cheap Mocal cooler (of the same size and angle connections)

All I would say if you haven't a pressure or oil temp gauge take it easy. Some even have EGT gauges that tell you even if the gradient changes by 1% or headwind increases a few mph.

Will do HarryMann. Quick one though, what do you think of my suggestion to source a fan switch that comes in earlier than the standard 87 degree one (Part no. 223440110) ? I had to rev the nuts off my AAZ before it would kick in and then it only stayed on briefly. Do such fan switches exist??

Just make sure the existing one works pretty well as spec.
If an original TD will have 2 stage, maybe if not, will have a one stage.
Fan should be 450W/550W max.. thats about 2/3 HP fan!

If its not a TD fan motor then maybe source one. Heavy wiring too for those amps, so check that out as well.

Is your diesel an original diesel with larger cooling tunnel (cab floor wider tunnel, different rubber mat)
This was done to increase exhaust airflow behind radiator for just the diesels but I don't know when this mod was introduced. Maybe 1985?
VW didn't change the whole front floor pressing for no reason... :)

its an 1989 original 1700 Non turbo diesel according to a mountain of documentation that came with the van so I'm pretty sure it is.
I'd imagine that its to original fan too which I can confirm is a two stage motor. Is the motor from a TD different?

As per your suggestion, I'm going to get another rad switch and stick it in just in case the existing one is duff. I'm always uneasy with spurious parts. Still thinking about an oil cooler, second had ones are £150 but in what condition and I haven't a clue how to fit one anyway.
