AAZ engine running hot
Hi,
I've a 1989 1700 diesel van that had a blown head gasket and subsequent 1.9TD engine swap before I bought it. The temp gauge shows roughly 2/3 to 3/4 when at operating temperature. The two speed fan doesn't kick in either. I've checked the fan itself, both speeds work when bypassing the switch, changed the rad fan switch but still no kicking in.
The rad itself gets hot all over which would indicate that the core is fine, I've also changed the engine temp sender recently. A mechaic friend says there may be two, anybody know??
Any advice would be very welcome as I'm not confident using it until I get this cooling issue sorted.

Are you sure its over heating? maybe its just the gauge sender or gauge that is reading wrong

AAZs can run a bit warm, hence recommendation of running an oil cooler.

Hi, Yes I've replaced the stat. I was wondering if there is a a way to check if the engine is actually running hot or just a a previous poster suggests, it's the gauge that's out. It certainly seems to be hkicking out a lot of heat. Also, it still wouldn't explain why the fan isn't kicking in. Even if the engine is running at its optimum temp it should kick in at some stage when idling.

They do run hot. Possible temp sender for gauge wrong one (colour).. should all ve in Wiki if you do but look.
Sender for rad is local to rad not engine.
1st stage fan comes on in traffic usually 2nd stage rarely.

Thanks HarryMann, I think its just down to the engine being different than the original. Today I rev'd the nuts off it for a couple of minutes and finally heard the fan kick in, only briefly mind. The gauge stayed at 2/3 all the time. The engine ticks over and starts fine so maybe its just that the AAZ engine runs hotter than the original 1700.
I see oil coolers are about £35-40. Are they easy'ish to fit or a complete bas***d? If an idiot could do it I might have a go myself.

I run an 80 degree stat in mine, and a brickwerks external oil cooler kit. The temp stays below half on the gauge unless its going up a monster of a hill.
Brickwerks oil cooler kit is about £375 from what i can remember, but works spot on.

1700 runs cooler than an AAZ..???
About 100 times cooler !!!

You need an oil cooler - read the current thread on turbo oil seals
Brickwerks kit has good spec and can save you an engine and increase your life too (from heart attack if you have oil temp gauge and/or pressure gauge to ponder without a cooler).
They are not £ 35 - 40 !
The kit with brackets and hoses about £375 but can save another engine swap.
No temp gauge; no pressure gauge; no cooler
= not long of this world if you drive it out of town far.

Thats fine, but thats for a front engined car, brickwerks kit has all pipes and fittings, thermostatic oil filter housing, and all the brackets to fit the cooler at the front of the van.

Also after looking at the advert, it is just a direct replacement Water/oil cooler which you will already have on your engine.
The brickwerks kit is for an additional front mounted Air/Oil cooler, take a look on the Brickwerks web page and you will see what I mean.
It sounds expensive but it works, and its a spot on kit.

I'm trying to think outside the box here. What about fitting a fan switch with a lower temperature range? Is that possible? The one I fitted is from Euro Car parts. I didn't think to check the temp range, D'oh.

Yep thats the water/oil cooler, its where your oil filter screws to, and your engine will allready have one fitted as standard.

IMHO the external oil cooler and 80 degree stat is the only way to go with the AAZ, don't forget its doing a hell of lot more work pushing a bus along than it does in a golf,
but as has been said you could just have a dodgy temp gauge reading. Either way the AAZ is much happier when the cooler and stat are fitted, it will help no end and stop premiture engine failure, thats why Brickwerks sell them in the first place.
