Reading the code. The code is pretty simple. The three-digit code was used for tyres manufactured before 2000. So for example 1 7 6 means it was manufactured in the 17th week of the 6th year of the decade in this case 1986. For tyres manufactured in the 90's, the same code holds true but there is a little triangle after the DOT code.
After 2000, the code was switched to a 4-digit code. Same rules apply, so for example 3 0 0 3 means the tyre was manufactured 30th week 2003

They look like '98 to me. In a way, it's academic. They're merely historic rather than archeological.

They make decent planters, or you can cut 'em about into swings or all sorts...

Thanks for putting this up. We were sitting having brekkie at the weekend in the glorious dales sunshine and Mrs BAJ25 says 'back tyre looks a bit cracked, are you sure it is alright?' Of course it is was my immediate response! Looks like new tyres all round for me soon :( . Fronts are not bad except for a chunk out of sidewall where one seems to have been curbed, but better safe than sorry. Couldn't find the age info though last night, maybe it is only on the inside? I found E2 006605 which I thought was it but now not so sure. Bri

It's often only on one sidewall. Which side that is depends on the guy who fitted it (assuming they're not assymetrics)

Minor cracks mean they have really had their day I think

Up for sale are my standard wheels due to purchasing some new wheels. I have a full set of 4 with load rated tyres which have loads of tread ( I would guess 5-6mm ). There is some minor cracking on the side walls but nothing horrendous. I'm after £60 or a swap for some front seats ( ideally saab etc) collection from East Sussex or I am happy to take to Bugjam.

I used to make tyres for Goodyear, and was in a research team on this very subject.
Tyres, are made from organic materials and man made (synthetic) materials all of which degrade with time by their very composition.
Steel and rubber do not mix, Rayon, Nylon and rubber do not mix. Yet our tyres are made from these materials.
What holds it all together is a clever use of the vulcanising process with different compound natural rubbers (hard and soft) synthetic rubber (Butyl) and various resins.
All these compounds are designed to carry weight and dissipate heat.
After 7 years the resin has hardened so much that it cannot hold the steel and rubber together in any stressful use.
The rayon carcass of the tyre (Plies) moves about within the rubber coating.
Eventually the strands of rayon split the thin coating of now very brittle rubber and catastophic failure of the sidewall occurs.
Under the tread lurks another time bomb, the steel mesh belt, once coated in natural soft rubber, is now coated in hard rubber which heats up and eventually separates from the tread and underlying carcass, the tread then unravels from the tyre.
