Just checked my tyres age !!!!!!!

Post by slippy8v »

Have the Komet 4 years now and only ever checked the thread on the tyres, but giving her the once over before the French trip i noticed the side walls had a lot of small cracks so,checked the date and was surprised to see they where 1998 from what i could see on the DOT info (correct me if wrong please)
So 4 new ones on today, the garage confirmed the date.

It's really important to change them as soon as possible, I had a blown out on the camper a few years ago, fortunately on the rear and religiously now change the tyres every seven years as not an experience I would want to repeat ever again. Our campers may not do many miles a year but they are heavily loaded especially for longer holidays. It's also worth checking the valve stems for perishing, my MOT tester always checks at the test and during the last ten years or so I have had to change around 5 on various cars, strangely despite having new valves stems and tyres on the camper the offside rear stem perished after only two years and that is the side that is against a fence so not exposed to the sun, maybe a cat has been creeping along the gap and peeing on it.

Reading here

three digit DOT codes are pre 2000 so if its three digit best replace it quick

sometimes the code is only on one wall so you may need to get underneath to see it

four digit codes are easier, my tyre examples for anybody who doesn't know what they are looking for, go check them now

Could you let me know the serial number of these firestones so I can order myself some (I can get them fitted and balanced for free).

Thanks!

I had new tyres back in about 2007. The spare was the original.
It does go against the grain throwing away tyres before they're fully worn - hangover from younger days when I could barely afford remoulds for a Morris Mini I suppose

Was there a little triangle next to the "408"? Because, if there wasn't, then they were 1988, not 1998!
