How to remove cv from driveshaft?

Post by jimmypatch »

So I've got the cv joint off of the gearbox, with much swearing!
How do I now get the bugger off of the drive shaft. I've checked the wiki and it doesn't say

There is a circlip on the end of the shaft, remove that, then in theory the cv should just pull off.... Reality means it may be a bit stuck and need persuading.

When you take it off be careful to keet it upright, once you let the thing fall appart ( which is very easy to do) you better have three hands and alot of patence to put it back together, you can also assemble it wrong so its locked solid as i did

So, any good methods for getting the hub nut off? I'm thinking of grinding it off and buying a new one

If you do need to 'persuade' it, then you should consider using a brass drift (punch) or similar between your hammer and the CV shaft / joint. If you hit the CV shaft or joint directly with a hammer there's a risk you'll distort one or the other and then the joint may never come off the shaft. The idea is that the brass, being softer than both the shaft and the joint, will distort first instead and prevent any damage.
