Aye I worked out my mistake quite a while ago & corrected it. Just never updated the post/piccy above. (Aligned to the notch, not the "horn" or what ever the sticky out bit like to be called)

Well...
Started travelling down A59 & got ~1.5 miles.
Long story short (involves a kind T2 guy named Roger, and two very helpful breakdown mechanics) found the alternator is kaput. Going to replace it now.
On side note;
Found the clutch was leaking on the slave cylinder end - The is some flexi pipe coming from the metal to the accuator on the slave cylinder. (Fathers words not mine, can you tell?) The flexi pipe is held on to the slave cylinder via some sort of putty that is just falling off at the moment. I added a hose clip to try to get enough pressure through to disengage the gears.
Is having flexible pipe instead of metal all the way normal on t25's? Going back home to grab Haynes but thought would let you guys know.
Also; Want me to start a "project" thread instead?

No, not normal.
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here

I was wrong on the wiring of the alternator. The +ve went striaght to the +ve battery terminal, the solenoid had its own wire from +ve on battery. The wire I thought was going to the -ve from the alternator was in fact disconnected & later ID's as probably the charging indicator light.
Think your information was forgotten in the mass rush of getting the engine working again. Sorry!

Nope but the alternator is kaput, so ordering replacement. Sorry no reply for 10 days, been away recharging my own batteries. The light isnt wired in correctly at all, but that is a minor issue.
Oh did I tell you guys that while recovering Ruby & being put on the back of the rocvery vehicle fuel started gushing out... panic set in and we found that an old fuel return line had not been blocked :S
Better on back of lorry than say a steep hill

ITS NOT a minor issue chap. If the light doesnt work you can throw as many new alternators/diodes/brush packs as you want at it, send them back as not working, exchange them and put the new one son, still wont work.
Before you do anything else, check the bulb and/or wiring (blue thin one going into black box from alternator) to it.
You seeing a couple of volts at the terminal for the blue wire when engines running but still only have 12v ish at battery?
What makes you or Roger T2 guy or the two mechanics think alternator is kaput other than its not charging?

Methodical always seems keyword.
..only comment would be to always say No. 1 at TDC - 'and' On Compression. May be implied but not always understood.

it was the OP's attitude that kept this going so long, so many help threads are people who don't explain the problem properly and fail to listen to advise, people soon get bored but somebody who wants to learn and does it with so much enthusiasm is good to see

Sorry for the long delay, been moving miniature Shetlands around & dealing with family issues (gran broke a hip etc)
As it stands at the moment Ruby is sitting on the farm, the replacement alternator does not actually fit (despite it being the correct part apparently) so I will be having a discussion at a trade counter over the importance of the cooling fan on an alternator not colliding with the rear timing belt cover.
ELVIS; the reason the mechanics thought the alternator was kaput is due to using one of those portable jump batteries (not sure the official name, looked similar to this to restart the engine, but the charging indicator in the side showed no charge coming back through to the "rescue battery".
It is worth noting that this wire has not been connected at any time in the last few years (talked to the previous owner). However shall follow up on your suggestion none the less and trace it back. Prepare for more misguided photo's once I get back to the van. We were checking alternator working via the charge it produced, but yes having a light showing it would be a damn sight easier

Good o chap.
Have a google for 'charging light alternator not charging' or similar words of your choice chap. If the charging light doesn't work when key is put in and turned for dash lights to, well, light up, then the alternator won't charge.
Simple error to make, put volt meter across back of alternator and assume its a duff alternator.
Have done CT and a DG in last few months with exactly same issues, both diagnosed with duff alternators, both paid garage time plus new/recon alternators and both still wouldn't charge, and both were fobbed off by their respective garages. Two very happy chappies, both fixed in ten mins or so - one was a snagged wire and one was blown bulb.
shame the garages that used a voltmeter to prove it was a duff alternator to get the trade didnt use the same voltmeter afterwards to check it was charging

Have a google for 'charging light alternator not charging' or similar words of your choice chap. If the charging light doesn't work when key is put in and turned for dash lights to, well, light up, then the alternator won't charge.

1981 Vanagon Westy Burning oil as fuel...
