Hi everyone, had a very eventful trip back from france over the weekend! 200 miles from Calais I got stuck in third gear! I had had this problem before so I knew the ball was popping out of the cup in the linkage. I had only replaced these in the last couple of months including all the bushes too. I could not fix at the side of the motorway so had to be towed off at a cost of 200 euros!!! But my AA cover will hopefully refund me this, Being a sunday in France and a bank holiday on the Monday, I was told I could not be taken to a garage or towed home till Tuesday. So got creative with some cable ties and managed to stop the linkage moving too far. This worked but only gave me 1st 2nd and 4th gears, so my top speed in 4th was 43mph all the way home and believe me i had to take a good run up for some of the hills in france. Anyway I made it home yesterday morning. Today I have had a look and it seems it is not really the linkage that is the problem. The toothed bolt part on the gearbox that the ball fits to seems to be worn so that the teeth are no longer gripping and causing the extra movment for the ball to jump out of the cup, Does anyone know what the bolt is called or if it is available. Im no Mechanic but pretty useful with the tools!
Ps its a five speed box 8E
thanks any help will be much appreciated

Re: gearbox/ linkage issues!!!
if the selector shaft splines are badly worn you will have to change the shaft and ideally the ball too, if you weld the two parts together then the shaft will have to be cut when it comes time for rebuild, plenty of them out there have been welded, obviously heat can damage the seal

Re: gearbox/ linkage issues!!!
Thanks for that, I had thought about welding it, Just a pain if I do need to take it off again! I suppose its not too bad as it would be easy to cut once the gear box was out anyway. Can I get away with a couple of small welds or all the weay round?
Ps Aiden where can I get the selector shaft from if I don't weld it and decide to do the the job properly!

Re: gearbox/ linkage issues!!!
Big thanks to Aiden for the part, put it in last night, took the time to grease all the linkage parts too! now it goes into all gears very smoothly! Had to change the plastic ball part too as the old shaft had eaten all the grooves out of that too!
