Starting
i have just bought a VW T25. (1.9 DG petrol automatic 1984 ]
I am currently having some problems staring it from cold start. Also, when it is warm, it is very lazy to start.
I have replaced a new battery and the wiring has been replaced. I have been told thats just the way the van is. Is this true? The starter motor was replaced and has currently done 3000 miles. i was just wondering if anyone could shed any light on this? as this is my first VW.
many thanks, Colin.

Re: Starting
Was the starter motor bush changed? Its separate to the motor and located in the bellhousing. If its worn the starter motor will struggle.

Hi Colin
1st-Welcome to the club
2nd- Lets clarify a couple of things. What do you mean trouble when cold? Does it crank fast but not start, crank slow and doesn't start or doesn't crank at all?
Same questions for when hot.
Mine is an auto, and when everything is happy the battery will crank the engine quite well. that engine will take some effort to turn over.
My 1st suggestion would do a "light test"- only useful if it doesn't crank at all.
turn on the head lights, and crank the engine (the engine should not be turning over)- if the lights go dim=battery, if the lights do not go dim=starter motor and or connection. i would make sure the connection to the starter is tight and clean and try again.

Just remember. If women don't find you handsome , they should at least find you handy.

Re: Starting
Does your negative battery terminal get warm when you are trying to start it?

Re: Starting
What does this mean if true or false, Kev?
Ermie is a nightmare at the moment.....brand spanking new battery..still exceptionally slow cranking and no start. Next thing is starter off and check all the wiring and connections.....did the bush just over a year ago...could that have failed already??? will do it again if necessary....but I am thinking new wiring from battery to starter motor. strange thing...once its done its first start of the day its normally fine.
The starter can sometimes be quite energetic, sometimes not.
what does a warm negative point to as opposed to a cold one? I know it means high resistance if warm....but what has failed in that instance??
Gotta get the old girl sorted

Re: Starting
In my experience a warm terminal suggests a poor contact in the terminal connector/post. a warm cable suggests the cable is too thin.ermie571 wrote:What does this mean if true or false, Kev?

The whole thing gets warm then the whole thing needs replacing
