AAZ Turbo oil return - Block or sump?

Post by dcfb77 »

Hi, still getting a bit oil in the inlet so going to redo turbo oil return.

Turbo is higher than standard due to custom exhaust manifold. I'm currently draining to block and run seems pretty downhill/flowing.

Should I definitely be going back to sump? Or would I be ok to keep draining to block?

If draining to sump I'm worried that I'm draining oil below the oil line.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks, David

On mine it's drained to the sump and the block has a bung in it, the modded return and bung are available from brickwerks.

Standard jx setup drains to bottom of sump so it's ok to drain there.

With your modded manifold, does it hold the turbo higher than the return connection on the block?
I wouldn't worry about a little oil to be honest, they all do it even when fitted in a car

Yes, turbo is much higher than standard AAZ or JX configuration. By about 4 inches. I have a downward slope on both options.

How does oil drain out of turbo if oil return is in the sump and sump is full of oil? Crankcase pressure?

I just want whats best for the van ;)

It will drain back to the sump, doesn't need pressure. Returning to the block would be nicer though, as it will flow much more freely. You will just have to make sure there is enough of a 'drop' to allow for camber of the road ect

I'm running a 1Z Tdi and using the inline AHU turbo and manifold set-up, the turbo mounts higher than the standard 1Z set-up, I'm draining back to the block and I've no issues at all, so I'd think your custom manifold should be the same
