what age to renew tyres

Hi

I need 2 new rear tyres and on checking realised that all my tyres are about 12 years old now. They still look ok , no cracks , tread ok, but should I be replacing them at this age?

Up to you no legal age in uk
If they are not cracking then leave them I say
Just changing two of mine which are 2000 because small crazing is starting

Some may say tyre technology has moved on and if you have the money you may get safer quieter more fuel efficient tyres now

General recommendation is to change ten year old tyres. By that time, the rubber will have hardened and lost a lot of grip, and won't be far off starting to crack. You might not necessarily see all the cracks. It'll take a lot longer before they're so bad as to actively fail, but...

Well I think i'll get 2 new ones now and look at replacing the other two before next year. Allready spent a fortune on the van this year

Yes good choice, you can get a bit more motoring from them and spread the costs makes it less painfull
keep a regular eye on them

Well this has been the most expensive year so far, but your right , already got jobs lined up for the winter that are gonna cost me...

Last year i spent nearly 2k on maintenance, engine went, gearbox went, radiator went,
vans probably only worth £2.5-3k

i have maintenance bills going back 17 years and i was sad enough to put them in excel
10 years for the prevous owner £4700 (done in a garage) average of £470 for 10 years
7 years for me £4500 ( done by me ) average of around £650 over the last 7 years

Thats maintenance only, origional conversion and lpg adds £2100,
Start adding the fridge and awning and propex another £1,200

totaling £12,500 in 17 years

If you cant afford that sort of money for maintenance probably best not buy one

Yes you are right a new vehicle looses more in depreciation every year than the maintenance of an old one

My maintenance bills are for parts only, add garage labour would make it very expensive for many people, yes you loose more on a new vehicle but many people with a t25 dont have the money for a new van so its not an option anyway.

Budget on £600 a year maintenance on average to keep on top of it, if you dont its like draining a battery, one year you will find the van needs more work than its worth or it will keep letting you down
