Gear selection and brake binding issues when hot

Post by Bulldog1 »

Hello,

We had to take the dog for a cruciate ligament operation this week. When he was discharged and £4000.00 later I put him in the van for the journey home and the bloody M62 was gridlocked.

The van was getting warm and we struggled to find 1st gear and the brakes started to bind, causing a loud screech and obvious loss of power because the brakes were binding.

Got home and let the van cool down overnight, tried again today and took it for a spin and once warm struggled to find first gear again and the brakes started to bind!!!!!!!

Could this be as a result of air in the system and will a system bleed solve the problem?

I had the gearbox out a few weeks ago to sort the leaking gearbox input shaft seal and crank shaft seal, also replaced spiggot bearing and clutch release bearing. Could this be related?????

Many thanks for your thoughts

could maybe do with another bleed, maybe also pedal action adjustment - symptoms are like binding spigot bearing but you have just replaced that so unless the shaft is bad then it shouldn't be that 4 speed or 5 speed ?
could the screech be clutch or engine belt rather than brakes - were they actually hot ?

You was robbed - mine had it done with state of the art titanium and plastic last year - £3000. He has recovered well and now you wouldn't know that he had had anything done except in reverse the leg doesn't work quite how he would like it.

He's a British bulldog, therefore the anaesthetic procedure is far more dangerous. Hence the extra cost.

They are prone to breathing problems in the general course of things aren't they?

Yes, however he's much better than most and used to walk for miles prior to his torn cruciate. He's got a face that looks more grumpy than usual at the moment. How long did it take for your dog to be back to normal(ish).

Any ideas about the campers issues?

It took a good 6 months for him to be good and a year for no one being able to tell that it had been done. He felt very sorry for himself for months.
The only thing that I can think of offhand with the brakes is that they are adjusted up too close and after they have been used a few times metal has expanded and they are binding all the time until they have cooled off again. Are all 4 sets of brakes getting hot or just the rear?

It is the front brakes but the 1st gear issue is the most concerning.
Glad your pooch is back to good health

Piston/s seized in the callipers then is 1st thing, I just replaced the lot when mine seized rather than mess about with the old ones.
