you really need to ensure that the finished steel is the same profile and shape etc as per original , this face is the one the seal fits to, and you shopuldnt need any filler,
as above ,when removing i run a stanley blade down the OUTSIDE of the screen flush with the glass and once you have a foot cut it will generally tear off all the way round.
i usually start at the top and work round each way till i have a foot or so in the middle bottom left, then you can ease the glass away from the seal each side and it wont fall down and out

also when refitting , form a loop in the cord in the middle of each side, we then fit by doing each vertical in turn, but each to your/their own
