4 speed gearstick adjustment

Post by itchyfeet »

OK so I have been refurbing my gear assembly and taking pics for a guide to go in the wiki as requested by CovKid but I want to get the adjustment bit right

this is a pic of where my gear assembly was adjusted to and Im happy that the gearstick sits nicely in neurtral half way between the 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th gates.

now both Haynes and Bentley say ( as I read it) slacken the pinchbolt place a guage in the gap between the 1st/2nd gate and the selector tip and then retighten, the dimension a of this is given as 23mm

so I do that and the gearstick then sits pretty much where the 3rd/4th gate is and I don't like it, it doesn't feel right but is that becase i'm just not used to it? or did I read the manual wrong?

Ok so I can answer my own question, the gear box sits in neutral natrally by 3rd/4th gate,
you have to move the gear lever to the left to rotate the shift rods anticlockwise as you view from the rear of the vehicle, this moves the shift lever on the gearbox against its spring and you can then get 1st/2nd, move it further you get reverse.

So if it's not set to sit by the 3rd/4th gate then you don't select gears properly

23mm it is then, god knows how it was working before

:ok
