Engine rebuild

Post by goody33 »

I recently had my carbs rebuilt at Gasure and Steve made me aware that I had a compression issue.
Since getting the van back home, I've had a compression test done and it is showing low compression on one of the cylinders and the mechanic has suggested that the cylinder may have burnt out.

So, my question is what do I do about it and where is good in the Midlands to take it?

Do I just sort the immediate issue out, do all the cylinders while I'm at it or just have the complete engine rebuilt?
I ask about where to take it as the mechanic it is with doesn't want to do the work and can't find anyone locally that does.

We were supposed to be going on holiday in it in two weeks time, but I think this has put a stop to that.

Any advice given is gratefully received.

Where are you going on holiday and how many miles will you cover?
I drove a car 10,000 miles once with a burned out valve it was only noticeable at low revs
My point is if you haven't really noticed it and you are not going far just carry on with your holiday and do it when you get back

This is what I was thinking.
If your going to have it rebuilt then might aswell have your holiday first. I too have run a car with a cylinder down, then scrapped it.

We are of to Cornwall, so its a 560 mile round trip.
I didn't want to do any more damage to the engine than necessary and thought that running on what is essentially 3 cylinders might to damage to the other cylinders?

If it feels smooth when driving I can't see any damage could occur its only excessive vibratio that could do damage I think
You presumably didn't notice it so it can't be really bad yet?
If you have hydraulic tappets you could do the basic hydraulic tappet set up first because if they were set badly that could cause low comression I think, long shot but worth a try

The mechanic looked at the tappets first, so I presume that is not the issue.
I have tried ringing some local VW specialists, but can't get through on the phone.

I have rebuilt a 2.0 cu engine for a customer, it came in down on power and slightly thirsty. Turned out it was a dropped valve seat on no3 and had picked up on no1. You wouldn't really notice it but doing a compression check showed a big 0 on no3. Was only once I did the comp check that it all became clear.

I don't know how long it was being driven like that though.
