Will leisure battery work if starter battery disconnected?

Post by petervw »

Will leisure battery work if started batter disconnected?

Reason I ask is something is running down my battery over a couple of days. Have my multimeter and will be searching.

Even so, if stopping for a day or two or more, I would prefer to disconnect my starter battery as a precaution against not being able to start the engine.

Its a newly acquired van, so have not been out camping yet.

The Leisure will work until it goes flat whether it is connected to the starter or not. Obviously you will reconnect to start the van and at this point the leisure will charge again.

Keep an eye on it though.... even "deep cycle" batteries don't like going flat.
All I ask is for the chance to prove that money won't make me happy.

Turn the fridge off? (has someone hard wired the fridge to the leisure for some crazy reason?)

I think Peter is saying that the starter battery is the one going flat, rather than the leisure battery, hence the suggestion to disconnect it and preserve its charge for when it's needed.

Peter, by all means disconnect the starter battery. When you've got time, put your multimeter between the negative terminal and the earth strap to see how much current is being drawn by whatever circuit is responsible. Then pull the fuses in the fuse box to see which circuit it is. My money's on the radio.

Yes that may be what was meant!
Split charge relay contacts fused together, dead leisure pulling down starter?
Hard to diagnose without more detail really.
