Brake calipers

Will the early type calipers fit on the later post 85 vans? I have a pair of brand new calipers bought for our earlier bus, and my 88 bus has just had it's front left caliper jam on. The idea is to fit the new ones and rebuild the old ones for replacement later in the year.

So will they fit?

No. The later brake disc is thicker.

Marvellous! So how do I free off a stuck caliper?

You can try working the pistons in and out, see if that helps. If not it could maybe be a brake flexi breaking up inside. Could be a couple of things really but without investigating/trying your. Not going to know.

Ok, problem is that its at our house which has no driveway so we're using a friends driveway to do this. Where would you go after the cylinder check?

Again difficult to say. Start at the caliper. Make sure caliper moves as it should, try to push pistons back (make sure fluid isn't going to overflow out of reservoir into van) if you find it difficult to move it back try cracking the bleed nipple. If they go back with the nipple loose it's possibly the flexi breaking up. If it doesn't move at all maybe the piston is seized/damaged/pitted. In which case it will need rebuilding. But first thing make sure things are free to move as they should.

Trying to remove the whole calliper unit as per the Bentley manual (the two 19mm bolts in the back of it). they are pretty seized on. Any bright ideas how to loosen these off? I havent a breaker bar and have tried the spanner on ratchet trick! They are being plusgas'd aswell. Heat?


Can I leave the brake caliper attached and remove the whole hub assemble by popping the ball joints off and just supporting it out the way?

Keep soaking with plus gas for a couple of days and then try some careful heat. They can seem tight but it would be worth investing in a breaker bar, about £15 normally.

unfortunately, I dont have a couple of days! otherwise I have to send it to a garge to be done by someone who knows what they are doing!

Ok, try heat and then a centre punch in the middle of the bolt head. Give it a good crack with the hammer to maybe break the hold the rust has on it.
