DK box which input shaft

Post by soniquethedog »

hello folks , i have just fitted a DK box to my 81 fitted with a 2.0l 8v gti engine , i used the input shaft from the DK box and shortened it by around 11mm , but it seems to make a bearing noise in all the gears but it has been rebuilt so cant be that , any ideas ? , should i have used a different input shaft ?

cheers dave

spigot bearing fitted to new engine ?
around 11mm ?
if not fitted correctly then end will be running against crank and loading up mainshaft bearing, should have got rebuilder to fit the input shaft before the diff was finally installed as it's easy to not fit it properly if fitting with the diff in situ

hello , thanks for the reply , brickwerks fitted the engine so i guess he fitted a spigot bearing , i have since changed the box myself after it was rebuilt , and i cut it back to the same size as the box i took out , what is the difference between a diesel shaft and a petrol one , as i used the one from the DK box , but its mated to a petrol engine

cheers dave

difference is 11mm and late diesel input shafts have parallel sided spigot end all the way to the undercut at the spline end whereas petrol ones and early diesel ones have taper shoulder to the spline
