noisy gearbox

hello folks , just fitted a 4 speed DK box to my 81 2.0 gti engined devon , it was noisy in all gears so i took it back out and had it refurbed , put it back in yesterday and it is still the same , its kind of the same noise you get if you are in reverse , any ideas what it might be ?

what was done in the refurb ? Is it quiet at idle clutch released ?
Noisy in all gears generally a big bearing or crown and pinion mesh/wear/damage
Are you sure it's not a wheel bearing or driveshaft ?

hello , thanks for the reply , i dont think it is the driveshaft or wheel bearings as they were ok before i changed the box , but i will look into it , not sure what was refurbished but will find out , do you think it might be anything to do with the rear main shaft in the box , as i used the one from the DK box , i had to cut it down at the end as it was too long , the noise is only there when you are driving and when you take your foot of the gas you can still here it

hello , yes Aiden its quiet with the pedal released , it seems to be worst in third gear , and not so loud in first

Well I'd go back to the refurb place and get them in for a test drive - petrol input shaft shortened by 11mm for use with diesel engine or other in line 4 ? You supplied, they fitted that ?

hello aiden, yes i fitted the shortened input shaft ( from the DK box ), the garage had it back last week and said it sounded like it was running dry , but its full of oil ( 80w/90 ) , i am taking it back out this week so they can have another look , wish me luck
