In an effort to sort the annoying oil leak I took the distributor out the other day and fitted a new O ring to the shaft. Carefully maked up all the leads etc, took it all apart, fitted the seal and re fitted it all. No problems, no re timing as I took the bracket off so just dropped it all back in place. Engine runs OK.
When I had the distributor out I looked at the drive on the bottom end of the distributor shaft, it is keyed to the shaft with a pin that is held in place with a coiled wire ring around the outside. The drive its self is loose on the shaft and there is a gap between the bottom of the distributor housing shaft and the top of the drive coupling. Is this right??? There is a small spring sitting in the top of the mating bit in the engine.
It all looks as per the book Haynes/Bentley but is the coupling suppost to be loose on the shaft (does not rotate relative to the shaft)
Thanks for your help
